The short films screened at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) recently revolved around issues of pollution, social inequality, corruption, racism, and many other sensitive subjects. As a part of the first Indo-Russian Film Festival ‘Youth Spirit’ 10 short documentaries by young filmmakers from Russia and India were screened during the festival.

Pixies on Earth by Padmini Rabha, Children of the Sun by Sofia Geveyler, Syncopation by Julia Byvsheva, Moths by Venkatesh Kumar, Manzil by Nitin Das and Amitesh Singhal, I Am Guilty by Aviral Raj Sharma, Pristine Waters by Niyati Sengar and Amaresh Kumar Singh and 18 Till I Die by Neerajtoor were the films that set the audiences thinking.

In 18 Till I Die, the director, who is a student of College of Arts criticises the young people of India for being too childish and the older generation for not giving a chance to the young to contribute to the management of their country. Children of the Sun by Sofia from Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, Moscow, exposes the most sincere and gentle feelings of the residents of the hospital for the mentally retarded.
A documentary like Tabassum, based on individual lives and directed by Jitendra Singh was the true story of a social worker working in the slums of Aligarh. Similarly, Pixies on Earth revolved around Pabitra Rabha, artistic director at Dapon Acting Troup (Guwahati), the man who enabled transition for a group of Assamese dwarfs.

The gerbera flower was chosen to be a symbol of the festival. Each petal contained the name of a film. Prior to the screening of any movie, every film director came up to the flower, introduced his creation, took out the petal and made a wish, which corresponded to the topic of the film. In the end, one could see a white flower with the expressed wishes written on it.

This concept was taken from a well-known Russian story by Valentin Kataev about a magic flower. When the protagonist of the story took off the petals of the magic flower, she could make a wish, which immediately came true. Lets hope the wishes of the makers come true as well, for that would definitely contribute towards making of a wonderful world.
