A horse cart-rider strangulated his wife to death before surrendering to police near Shamanna Garden, Byatarayanapura, on Wednesday night.

According to police, Abdul Aziz, 33, had married Mehar Taj, 29, five years ago.

“It was the second marriage for both of them,” police said. “The couple had two children. Taj also had a child from her first marriage and all of them were living in a rented house on Bilal Masjid Road, near Shamanna Garden.”

Aziz’s first wife, who lived nearby, was allegedly a bone of contention between Aziz and Taj.

Domestic row

On Wednesday, the couple and their three children went to a dargah near Shivanasamudra. When they returned home  about 8 pm, Aziz told police that Taj refused to cook dinner and demanded that he buy food from a nearby hotel.

When Aziz said he did not have enough money left after their trip, she remained adamant and Aziz eventually bought food from the hotel.

After the children went to sleep, however, a row broke out between the couple, police said.

‘Ill-treat’

Taj demanded money for domestic expenses. When Aziz refused, she allegedly began to shout at him, saying he gave all his earnings to his mother and his first wife. She also accused him of ill-treating her.

“She was screaming at the top of her voice,” Aziz told police. In a fit of rage, he took a nylon rope lying nearby and strangled Taj, police added.

After he had killed her, Aziz, in a state of panic, rushed to a friend’s home, next door.
The friend took him to the police station where he confessed to the crime.
Byatarayanapura police have arrested Aziz.
