Spicy delights on a platter

Last Updated 28 June 2013, 12:36 IST

There’s no dearth of eateries in Bangalore. But for someone looking for authentic Chettinad-style dishes, Naachiyars — a rooftop eat-out in Ulsoor — is probably one of the best places to go. The dishes here would work well for those who appreciate high levels of spice and the unique style of cooking that Chettinad is all about.

From soups to starters and full-fledged meals, the place has something for everyone. The different offerings they have in hot soups are eratchi soup, kai kari soup, kozhi soup and more. In terms of starters, vegetarians can indulge in dishes like paneer tikka, chilli milli mushroom, kali miri lehsooni aloo, and for the non-vegetarians there’s malai reshmi tikka, achari murg tikka and more. “We have included options for newcomers who might not be open to the Chettinad style of cooking right away, as well as stuff for the regulars,” says Senthil, the owner of the eatery. For the North Indian delights — like the tandoor items — Senthil has hired a North Indian cook to keep the taste as authentic as possible.

There are a variety of delicious dosas at the eatery, such as the ghee roast, rava dosa, muttai dosa and so on. And the table-long paper dosa, as crisp as any dosa can be, is a wonder to indulge in. The regulars can always opt for the meals that come with their typical Chettinad ingredients.

“We see a mixed crowd here — there are professionals in the many MNCs around
Ulsoor, who opt for the meals and similar items. We also see typical family gatherings, elderly people and others who like the flavour of our typical dishes,” Senthil comments.

Many of the regulars at the eatery love the non-vegetarian dishes because of their unique flavour. Manjunath, an IT professional, says, “ I love the chicken items. That’s what I order whenever I come here.”

Other regular steamed items like idli, idiyappam, kuli paniyaram and appam, are also hot favourites. Different parottas like the Ceylon parotta, Veech parotta, eratchi kothu parotta and others options are also included on the menu. The specials on the menu include various seafood dishes like nandu varuval and weekend specials like Dindigul Thalapa Biryani in mutton, chicken and plain are also options. And for those with a sweet tooth, there is payasam, sweet kuli paniyaram, elaneer payasam and more. This eatery is located at No. 36/2, Haudin Road, Ulsoor and is open from 12 noon to 4 pm and 7 pm to 11 pm. For details, call 41738588.
