Man gets life term for raping minor

In a first conviction in Karnataka under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, a man was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday for raping a nine-year-old girl.

He was also ordered to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to the victim’s father within a month, besides a Rs 10,000-fine.

The Principal District and Sessions Court here found Shivappa Madar from Shibaragatti village of Dharwad taluk guilty of raping the minor. The judge, K Nataraj, held that the sexual assault on the minor had been proved beyond doubt. He sentenced the accused under Section 6 of the said Act which came into force in May last year.

The court held that Madar went to the victim’s house at Amminbhavai village on January 5 and asked for a glass of water. As the girl went in the house to fetch water, the accused followed her. Then he tied her hands and gagged her before raping her, the court observed.

Madar is the first accused to be tried under the new legislation. The court disposed of the matter in less than six months. The court further held that if the accused failed to pay the fine, he had to undergo one year simple imprisonment.

Public Prosecutor Megharaj Kabadi hoped the punishment would send a strong message to society.
