Union Surface Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes said on Saturday that appropriate steps will be taken on the State government's proposal to upgrade select State Highways into National Highways.

Speaking to reporters, he said it will be convenient for the Road Transport and Highways ministry to take up the upgradation work if the State government provides land. Without the availability of land, it is difficult to upgrade the State Highways, he added.

He was speaking after visiting the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) main office on Queen’s Road. He said he is a Congressman first and the minister next.
More funds

“I will hold talks with all my Cabinet colleagues and try to get as much funds as possible for the State in the next budget. All ministers in the State government should visit the KPCC office and follow the party’s instructions,” he stated.

KPCC chief G Parameshwara said he would write to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and all his ministerial colleagues, urging them not to take part in celebrations or felicitation functions in view of natural calamity striking Uttarakhand.
