A former employee of a cash replenishment agency has been arrested for stealing Rs 2.80 lakh from a Punjab National Bank ATM in east Delhi’s Mandawali, police said on Monday.

Sanjeev Singh, 25, who hails from Etah in UP, is married and has a one-year-old son.
He worked with a cash replenishment agency for 14 months from September 2011 to December 2012.

“While working there, he learnt how to feed cash in ATMs. He also came in contact with a security guard named Rajkumar, who taught him the method to steal cash from ATMs,” said Ajay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (east).

Singh had also committed thefts at Punjab National Bank ATMs in Jafrabad, Welcome Colony, South Ganesh Nagar and Ras Vihar. On Sunday, Singh saw that no guard was present at a Punjab National Bank ATM in Mandawali.

“Along with his associate Raghav Yadav, Singh made a plan to steal from the ATM,” Kumar said.

“He covered the camera and lights with paper, handkerchief and black tape. After partially closing the shutter of the ATM booth, he opened the panel of the machine using a screwdriver and other instruments,” Kumar said.

Raghav was waiting outside on a motorcycle, but he fled after seeing a security guard. Singh then threatened the guard and tried to flee, but was nabbed by two constables on patrol.
