Low pressure over Bay makes monsoon vigorous in TN

Last Updated 04 November 2009, 17:35 IST

The trough lay centered between Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu coast and under its influence fairly widespread rainfall is expected in the coastal and southern districts of the State and at few places in the interior parts in the next 24 hours, the regional meteorological office in Chennai said on Wednesday evening.

Chennai was lashed by heavy rain in the evening, flooding arterial roads and making it difficult for school children to return home. Weathermen predicted more heavy rain over the north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and isolated showers in some interior places.
Vehicular traffic in the metro’s arterial roads was severely hit due to the water-logging in several places late this evening.

The pilgrim centre of Rameswaram down South recorded a maximum of 8 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, followed by Mayiladuthurai and Tarangambadi with 6 cm each. The weathermen said Chennai and its neighbourhood would be cloudy with one or two spells of showers or thundershowers in the next 48 hours.
