There is an unfortunate trend that movie sequels follow, especially for ones of the animated nature, however brilliant they may be. The novelty of an idea fades and one usually feels more fondly for the prequels once a part-two comes out.

The same holds for Despicable Me 2. Given that the plot for this movie is not as fierce as its prequel, the movie does not fail too miserably. Gru, his army of minions and his three little girls dominate this movie as much as the last, making it worthwhile for those who loved part-one.

In Despicable Me, Gru hatched sinister plots for world domination while using fatherhood as the kicker for his plans. Now, the sequel has Gru’s character devoid of diabolicalness with him embracing fatherhood and joining a league against villains. To enjoy this movie maximally, refrain from viewing it as a sequel. Tazers, freeze-guns and other swanky gadgets allow whimsical fights throughout the movie. Gru dressing up for his daughters in a fairy costume among other fatherly acts warms a viewer’s heart.  The minions with conversations in their indecipherable language and their renditions of popular songs revisit and validate what we loved about them in Despicable Me.

The movie may be commended on the quality of its humour. Gru and his army of little yellow creatures never fail to make you laugh when their characters are intended to.
While the movie’s animation is spot-on, watching it in IMAX may not be very well worth it as most of the effects can be enjoyed in 3D, save for a few while the credits start rolling.
For cartoon lovers everywhere, it is favourable and is an ideal family movie. It is comparable to its prequel, but it is going too far to say that it has outdone Despicable Me.
