The newly-elected student union of Mount Carmel Degree College has a good mix of students from the second and third years. The students seem excited to be a part of something they’ve never experienced before.

Metrolife interacted with the newly-elected members of the student union to understand how they plan to strike a balance between academics and new responsibilities.

The students say shouldering the responsibility of the student union is not only prestigious, but also helps them be more accountable. They hope to work in tandem with the faculty members to implement their plans and programmes for the coming academic year. The union members observe that they share a good rapport with
the principal and the student welfare officers.

The college has about 30 student associations and each association is headed by a student and mentored by a teacher. “Students develop confidence when they are
given responsibilities at a very young age. All the activities for the year are planned and executed by the students after consultation with the principal and
student welfare officers,” explains Sundaravalli with the department of home science.

The members of the student union say that they have never felt more confident before. Derin Sara Mathew, president of the union, thinks that being a leader is believing in yourself and constantly working for others. “I am looking forward to a great year of learning and working at building up mechanisms for greater glory, together with my fellow students.

I hope we can give a wider platform to students for greater contribution,”
observes Derin.

Shriya Desai, the vice-president, thinks the union has people with different talents and strengths, each unique in their own way. “I would like to think that I will be able to gain some of these strengths as the year progresses and become an effective role-model for all the future Carmelites,” she says and adds, “as a union, we hope to make this college a place where students experience enough to make them determined in every challenge that they face”.

Nandhini Y, the cultural secretary, says that she is looking forward to working with great enthusiasm and unity. “We hope to take suggestions from the students of our college and make it a wonderful year with new elements. As the cultural secretary, I will surely give equal opportunities to students who come forward and do my best to take the college to greater heights,” she says.

The other members of the union are Mohini Nandwani (treasurer), Shreoshee Mukherjee (assistant cultural secretary) and Aditi Shah (general secretary).
