A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped for over five months by her neighbour in Sri Rama Layout in Kengeri.

The crime came to light a week ago when her mother found that the girl was pregnant.

The victim's mother - Rekha (name changed), 28 - lodged a complaint with the Kengeri police on Monday, accusing her neighbour Nagendra, 23 of, sexually abusing her daughter for the past five months. The girl was a class IX student at the government high school.

Nagendra had reportedly fled his house, after he came to know that the victim and her mother had lodged a police complaint. But, the Kengeri police, on Tuesday evening, arrested him near Nelamangala, while he was on his way back to the City from his native place, Pavagad in Tumkur district. The police have registered a case of rape against him.

The police have got the girl medically examined at Vani Vilas Hospital and also by a gynaecologist. The girl and the mother were taken to Nimhans where they were counselled for the trauma that the girl went through.

Nagendra was working as a garbage van driver with the BBMP on contract basis. Rekha works as a sweeper with BBMP and her husband Srinivas is said to be a chronic alcoholic. He does not live with the family these days.

The girl had stopped going to school for the past two months. She was complaining of frequent stomachaches, family sources said.

When the girl reportedly fainted a week ago, Rekha took her to a nearby clinic, where the doctor confirmed that she was five months pregnant. The girl then confided to Rekha that Nagendra was sexually abusing her, when Rekha was not home. When the girl told Nagendra two months ago that she was pregnant, he allegedly threatened to kill her, if she revealed the matter to anybody, including her mother.

Nagendra lives with his family just a few blocks away from the girl’s house. His wife Malathi told Deccan Herald that it was Rekha who ‘seduced’ her husband away from her.
Victim to have the child?

Family sources of the victim told Deccan Herald that doctors had advised against an abortion as the girl was very weak and was five months into the pregnancy.

Varalakshmi, the victim's aunt, said the family was helpless and the girl might have to bear the child.
