In evidence of rising crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh, a 20-year-old college student was allegedly set ablaze after being gang-raped by her lover and his two friends in chief minister's home district of Etawah.

The victim, who had suffered 80 per cent burn injuries, was rushed to the super speciality hospital at Akhilesh's native village of Saifai in the district, where she died on Friday, according to the sources here.

Reports said that the lover, who was also from the village, had called the victim to meet him at his house on Tuesday night where he and his friends allegedly raped her.

The alleged culprits set her ablaze when she asked the lover to marry her, the victim’s family members said.

“They poured kerosene on her and set her on fire,” the victim's family alleged. An FIR has been filed against the culprit and others, but no arrests have been made so far, police said.

He further claimed that the couple wanted to marry, but their wedding plans had to be cancelled since the girls’ family refused to foot the bill for the ceremony.
