She can no more be referred to as a small town girl from Kotdwar, Uttarakhand because Urvashi Rautela has made it big in the glamour world. From being the only Indian girl to have won maximum titles in beauty pageants to making her debut in Bollywood opposite Sunny Deol (in Singh Saheb the Great (SSG), the promising lass has miles to go!
In the City recently, Urvashi scorched the ramp as a showstopper for preview of Wedding Asia 2013 and later shared with Metrolife that her journey from the hills of Uttrakhand to the ramp of Mumbai has been “beautiful. It was accomplished with lots of hardwork but has been like a dream come true,” she says.
A geek in school, the crowned beauty was more into sports and passionate about dance. “I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer and even cleared IIT and AEEE.
But my mom who is a skin expert discovered the model in me and I contested and won the title of - Miss Teen India 2009. She has been guiding me since,” she shares adding that she wanted to conquer the universe and not just retain herself to the world.
“It’s all about priority. Miss India doesn’t send you to Miss Universe and I wanted to go for Miss Universe and not Miss World,” she avers clearing the truth behind her replacement by the first-runner up of I Am She. “I was supposed to go for the finale of the I Am She Miss Universe pageant but felt short by 24 days as per rules and didn’t turn 18 as on February 1, 2012. But no regrets.”
“Recently I got a mail from the pageant organisers who want me to take part in the finale but my movie is releasing in October and I can’t go,” she says with a sigh and explains, “Acting was never on my wishlist unlike many girls who participate in the pageants. I wanted to be Miss Universe for my country.”
But after becoming a popular face in the industry, she was flooded with film offers. “I was approached for Ishaqzaade. The director was keen to sign me but I was only 17 and not ready for films. My intuition says that SSG is the perfect launch for me. If you look at Anil (Sharma)’s movies, it’s quite evident how he showcases his female protagonist in a prominent way.”
Director Anil Sharma saw in her the “keeda to succeed,” and the pretty girl didn’t find anything difficult on the sets. “I can relate to acting so it wasn’t challenging for me.”
The candid confession, however, is related to her co-star. “I didn’t grow up watching movies and feel ashamed to say that I watched Gadar and Sunny Deol’s other movie after I met him. I won’t say this in front of him,” she laughs adding, “Sunny is very helpful and shy but I was comfortable working with him. He is 38-years older but the age difference doesn’t appear on screen.” We wonder how Anil manages to hide it through his camera skills when Urvashi plays Deol’s love interest?
