Waiting for the right sound

Last Updated 19 July 2013, 14:00 IST

It’s hard to find the top names in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) perform on one stage.

‘Sound Awake’, a one-day DJ festival, slated to be held on August 4 from
11 am to 11 pm at Supernova Arena and Convention Centre, Yelahanka, Airport Road, will feature performances by top international artistes.

Hosted by DNA Networks, the objective of the festival is to redefine EDM. The festival, held in collaboration with Ministry of Sound and HedKandi, will bring together popular names like Ferry Costen, Gareth Emery, Hardwell, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Sander Van Doorn and other famous disc jockeys.

After touring a couple of cities across the country, the DJs will descend on Bangalore on August 4. Among those who will be performing are Taboo, a DJ who has churned out hits like ‘Boom Boom Pow’, ‘I Gotta Feeling’ and ‘The Time (Dirty Bit) with ‘The Black Eyed Peas’ and simultaneously started a solo career in the EDM genre.

Darude, the Finnish DJ who is popular for his hits ‘Sandstorm’, ‘Feel the Beat’ and ‘I Ran So Far Away’ and Yves Larock, writer and producer who is popular for both his DJ and music skills, will also perform. Sharing his experience, Yves Larock says that he is more than looking forward to performing in Bangalore.

“I am excited to play at this festival. I think this is a huge step forward for EDM in India and I am happy that I am a part of the first edition,” says Yves. There’s a lot that EDM fans can expect from Yves and he’s sure not to disappoint his fans when he says, “I will be putting together a lot of my own productions but I will also play some tracks of other producers I like at the moment. It’s difficult to say because I always see how people react and go with the flow. I never prepare pre-defined sets.”

Music lovers could watch out for ‘The Shapeshifters’, the duo is the stalwart of British dance culture and producers of Britain’s most successful dance acts. The ‘Ministry of Sound’ will feature its own set of DJs.

It’s the fast-changing music scene in the City that prompted Venkat Vardhan, managing director of DNA Networks, to think of hosting a DJ festival. “We notice that music
aficionados are moving toward electronic dance music and we wanted to offer this category of music lovers a true music experience.

Today, just about any DJ playing in a nightclub is dubbed as a ‘festival of sorts’, which is not the case if you visit the real DJ festivals abroad,” explains Venkat. He further states
that in addition to a day of non-stop music, there will be food and beverage.

“We have asked the Goa flea market to set up stalls at the venue during the festival.

There will be 50 stalls displaying all kinds of things. Music lovers will be treated to a wholesome experience.” The flea market will have kiosks which have been hand-picked from the various flea bazaars of Goa, which sell authentic handicrafts, hand-made leather goods, jewellery, ceramics, clothing and trinkets.

When asked about the ticket pricing, Venkat says, “We have kept the ticket price at
Rs 1,000 which I think is reasonable for 12 hours of non-stop music. There will also be a corporate package which will be priced at Rs 5,000.”
