Senior citizen rams moped into ambulance, dies

Three people were killed in separate accidents in the City since Sunday evening.

A senior citizen died after his  moped rammed a speeding ambulance near Kannamangalapalya on Monday. The deceased, P Anjappa, 70, was a resident of C Hosahalli and  employed as a security guard.

He was returning home on his moped after finishing his night shift, when he took a sharp U-turn and collided head-on with the ambulance. The ambulance was bringing a patient to the City from Chikkaballapur.Seriously injured, Anjappa was rushed to Baptist Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The patient onboard the ambulance was in no way affected by the accident, police said. The International Airport Traffic Police have registered a case.

Pedestrian mowed down

In another accident, a pedestrian was mowed down by a speeding SUV on the Hennur-Bagalur Main Road on Sunday night.

The victim has been identified as Basavaraju, 45, a native of Devadurga, Raichur district. Police sources said that Basavaraju, a resident of Vaddarapalya, was employed as a construction worker at an apartment complex under construction nearby.

He was returning home after visiting a street corner shop when the accident occurred, police said.Struck by a speeding SUV on the Hennur-Bagalur main road, Basavaraju was immediately moved to a nearby private hospital by passersby, but was declared dead on arrival. The driver of the SUV abandoned his vehicle (KA 03 MM 9777) and fled the scene. Banasawadi Traffic police have registered a case.

Run over by bus

A commuter, who attempted to board a bus near 8th mile, Peenya on Sunday night, was killed after he fell and was run over by the same vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as Mallesh, 50, a resident of Netaji Nagar, Dasarahalli. Mallesh was attempting to board the private bus to go to Tumkur.

However, he fell down and came under the wheels of the bus. He was killed instantly. The bus driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene. Peenya Traffic police have registered a case.

Mallesh’s wife Satyavathi, in her statement to the police has said that their only daughter had secured an MBBS seat and that Mallesh was struggling to arrange money for her fees. “On Sunday, he was on his way to Tumkur to borrow some money from a relative,” she said.

14 minors rescued

The Labour Department and members of Child Helpline (Makkala Sahaya Vani), rescued
14 minor boys from a private bag manufacturing unit at Shivajinagar on Monday.

According to officials, most of the children hail from Bihar and are aged below 14. “They were forced to work in the factory near St Mary’s Basilica at Shivajinagar,” Additional Labour commissioner J T Jinkalappa said.

Shivajinagar police have detained  the factory owner Nayar Jamal and his associate for questioning.The rescued children were shifted to Bala Mandir near Kidwai Institute of Oncology, where they would undergo medical examination. The additional labour commissioner said that the department would take measures to reunite the children with their parents.

Five injured

Five persons were injured after a private bus rammed a tractor in Avalahalli police station limits on Monday. The accident occurred after the bus rear-ended the tractor-trailer, throwing all its occupants onto the road. The tractor toppled and fell off the road due to the impact of the collision, police said.

All the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital. Avalahalli police have arrested the driver of the private bus.

No progress yet

The City police are yet to lay their hands on the miscreants who mugged a police sub-inspector two days ago.

“In the absence eyewitness accounts, the footage of the CCTV cameras in the area may provide any breakthrough in the investigation,” a senior police official involved with the probe said. The police have also sought co-operation from the public in tracing the miscreants.
