Ready for the hotel industry

Pursuing goals
Last Updated 24 July 2013, 13:59 IST

Like any industry, a lot is expected of the hospitality sector, of which hotel management forms a major part. It is with the aim of preparing themselves for a bright future in this industry that students have joined MS Ramaiah College of Hotel Management.

Metrolife speaks to some freshers to understand their goals and expectations from the college. “I’ve heard a lot about the college. It’s got friendly faculty and ranks high among India’s colleges. The hotel industry’s an evergreen one and this place guarantees 100 per cent placement in it,” says a focussed Vaishnavi R.

The assurance of a future job in the industry runs common among students who have chosen to study here. “From whatever I have read and heard from my seniors, this course ensures a sense of security. My sister has also studied here, which is partly why I’ve decided to do hotel management too,” notes Veena, another fresher.

She adds, “There is a lot of interaction with the industry and I feel this will give me the right kind of training. It’s been good so far and I’m sure it’s going to get better.”
Radhika has come to the college to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time chef. “I love cooking and seniors from this college told me that the teachers here will help me improve my skills. The exposure you get here, the co-curricular activities you can participate in and even the infrastructure is good,” shares Radhika.

Of course, it isn’t just the girls who are in the hospitality sector. The young men who have joined the college are just as ambitious, if not more. Ishkaran Arora, for instance, knows exactly what he wants. “My family runs a hotel back in Udaipur and after my Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM), I will do a Masters and then go join it. I’ve always wanted to be the general manager and when I take on my responsibility at the hotel, I want to be well versed with how the industry works. I think this college will help me be that,” he explains. However, not everyone is as sure of their next step. Many wish to discover what their skill sets are over the next few years and then specialise.

There are even others who feel that the course will shape them as people and make them fit to enter the service industry. “I love interacting with people and that’s the reason I want to be a part of this industry. I already have some friends here and am keen to make friends as the classes go on,” says Piyush, a fresher.  His batchmate Tushar adds, “The brand name is strong and I think it will make me even more confident about myself. I want to be a part of the food and beverage service sector in the future.”
