The dispute of allowing women to perform namaz at K R Puram mosque in the city took a new turn, as members of Veera Kannadiga Tipu Sene staged a protest urging to stop the practice, here on Saturday.

“Administrative committee of the mosque has gone against Islam by allowing rich women to perform namaz at the mosque. This should be stopped,” the protestors demanded.

Wakf Board opposes

Women being allowed to perform namaz was also opposed by the district Wakf Board on Saturday. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner and administrative committee of K R Puram mosque, Wakf Board has opposed women being allowed to the mosque.

“It has been learnt that men and women are entering the mosque from the same door, which is unacceptable. This should be stopped immediately and alternate arrangements to make women perform namaz elsewhere should be made,” the letter said. It can be recalled that women being allowed to perform ‘Taraveeh’ namaz at K R Puram mosque had stirred a controversy. Recently, a person was also attacked near the K R Puram mosque by members of a sect, for allowing women to enter the mosque.

While the sect allowing women to enter the mosque has defended women performing namaz at the mosque, quoting religious scriptures, the opposing sect has also quoted the same to prohibit women.
