The sexual assault on a young photojournalist in Mumbai triggered an outrage with politicians cutting across parties lines condemning the incident as shameful.
The incident stirred memories of the Delhi gang-rape incident in December which led to nation-wide protests.

As people from all walks of life voiced their anguish, politicians on Friday demanded harshest punishment to the perpetrators.

The attack also echoed in the Rajya Sabha which erupted in anger with agitated members expressing serious concern over increasing atrocities on women and the government assuring “harshest” action against the culprits. Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal said sexual assaults must be dealt with “in the severest manner”.

“Despicable! We are shamed! How long & god forbid, how many more before the criminals are punished? Wake up, India!” said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said: “A new legislation was proposed in the Parliament few days after the Delhi gang-rape incident. I hope the legislation will now be implemented in this case.”
