Youth tried to sexually assault her

A teen allegedly killed herself in Sitapur district after a  youth attempted to rape her.

Reports said the 16-year-old victim was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her house on Sunday.

Police sources said Chotey Lal, who had come to the village from the neighbouring Lakhimpur Kheri district, had tried to rape the teen when she had gone to fields to answer nature's call on Saturday night.

However, Chotey fled after the girl raised an alarm following which a few villagers ran to help her.

The teen had narrated the incident to her parents. "She appeared to be very upset after the incident," her father said.

On Sunday, the victim hanged herself from the ceiling fan in the house when her parents had gone to the fields and her younger brother was also not at home.

A case has been lodged against the culprit and a search has been launched to nab him. The body of the victim has been sent for post-mortem.

Earlier also girls had killed themselves either after being raped or after unsuccessful rape bids.

A few months ago, a teen had killed herself by consuming a poisonous substance in J P Nagar district after undergoing repeated sexual harassment. The girl was allegedly being sexually harassed by a youth from her own village for the past several days. The victim had complained to her parents and the latter tried everything to prevent the harassment but it in vain.

Another teen had committed suicide after being raped by a youth in Deoria district a few weeks ago.
