Speaking to Deccan Herald, ACP G T Ajjappa said an inquiry would be initiated against him for cheating Priyanka and falsely promising her of marriage.

Anand’s arrest fulfils one of the two demands raised by Priyanka, who along with more than 200 people from various organisations had staged a protest in front of Nandini Layout police station on Saturday morning. The protesters also demanded strict action against Inspector Chandru and his staff who had ‘failed’ to take action when a complaint was lodged with the Nandini Layout police on October 30.

She contended that if the police had acted swiftly then and not shirked their responsibility, matters would not have become so grave. Later, she met Home Minister V S Acharya and submitted a petition demanding justice. Acharya assured her of all the help as per law and directed the Commissioner of Police Shankar Bidari to take action against Anand and the ‘erring’ police officers.

The ACP asserted that the police had acted as per law and there was no lapse on their part. He, however, said that action would be taken if any lapse on their part came to the fore during an enquiry.

Married woman kills self

A 22-year-old married woman succumbed to burns after setting herself ablaze on Friday.
Manjula, a native of Doddaballapur taluk, locked herself inside her house at Maddaiana Street in Devanahalli around 10.20 pm and set herself on fire. Neighbours heard her screams and informed the police, who broke the door open. She had sustained 98 per cent burns and succumbed to the injuries at Victoria Hospital around 12.45 am on Saturday. In her statement to the police, she ruled out anyone’s hand in the incident.

Manjula was married to one Ravi, a cleaner with a transport company, seven months ago. Their marital life ran into rough weather just a month after marriage. She had come to Bangalore six months ago and lived alone in a rented house. Police said her relationship with her mother was also sour. While her mother and elder sister have arrived, there is no word from her husband yet.
