A hotel employee was stabbed to death during a drunken brawl near Swastik Circle, Seshadripuram, late on Wednesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Ramesh, 21, of Sadashivagad in Karwar. According to police, Ramesh was employed as a cook at a Shanti Sagar outlet near Swastik Circle for the last two years. Three of Ramesh’s friends — Surendra, Sandeep and Pratap — were also injured in the brawl and are currently being treated at KC General Hospital. They are said to be out of danger.

Sources in the police said that the incident occured late on Wednesday night when Ramesh and his three friends — all of whom are employed at the Shanti Sagar outlet — were returning home from a bar. “All four men were in an inebriated condition,” police said.

In his statement to police, Pratap said that they were accosted by five men around 11.30 pm. One of them began to yell at Ramesh for staring at them and slapped him, Pratap said. After Ramesh returned the slap, his friends led him away from the area before the situation could escalate. Ramesh, however, had dropped his cellphone in the melee and the group returned to the location to search for the device, when they were attacked.

One of them stabbed Ramesh with a button knife. The rest of us were attacked with stones, Pratap told police. The four injured men were rushed to K C General Hospital, where Ramesh was declared brought dead. According to police, Ramesh had suffered a deep knife wound in the thigh, which resulted in his death.

Seshadripuram police have registered a case of murder and are investigating. Police said one of the attackers has been identified. “We have clues about the identities of the rest of the assailants and they will be nabbed soon,” police said.

Ramesh and the three men lived together at a terrace accommodation of the hotel.
