State to consult legal experts on Cauvery issue

The government will hold a meeting with legal experts on December 16 to finalise its stand to be placed before the Supreme Court on Cauvery water sharing issue, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Jayachandra said a team of ministers including Water Resources Minister M B Patil and himself will discuss the issue with senior counsel Fali Nariman who will appear before the court on behalf of the State. The hearing is scheduled for January 15.

Jayachandra said among other issues, proper utilisation of Cauvery river water, storage of water at Shimsha and Mekedatu and setting up of new hydel power projects will be discussed. By starting hydel power projects at Shimsha and Mekedatu, the State can store 30 tmc to 80 tmc ft of water, he pointed out.
