DMK decides to contest LS poll alone

A few days after ruling out an alliance with the Congress, DMK chief Karunanidhi on Tuesday said his party would go it alone in the Lok Sabha elections.

“Yes we will be contesting alone,” Karunanidhi said in response to questions on the issue.
At the party’s general council meeting on Sunday, Karunanidhi declared that the DMK would not align with the Congress for the general election.

Reacting to BJP spokesperson Nirmala Seetharaman's remark that her party would consider requests from the DMK for an alliance, Karunanidhi said: “We have not decided on inviting the BJP for a poll alliance.”

Karunanidhi thanked Tamil Nadu Congress committee president B S Gnanadesikan for listing out reasons for the DMK severing ties with the Congress. Gnanadesikan had said the DMK already severed its ties with the Congress in March.

He also said the Congress did not send any letter to the DMK seeking its support for the Lok Sabha elections.

Replying to a question on the DMK’s stand on the Lokpal Bill in Parliament, he said DMK parliamentary party leader T R Baalu has been instructed on the stand to be taken when the bill comes up for debate. "You will come to know after our representative (Baalu) takes the decision," he said.
