SP offers Devyani LS ticket

Last Updated 19 December 2013, 20:51 IST

Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and Uttar Pradesh Minister Azam Khan, who had faced alleged “humiliation” in the US during his visit there in April this year, has invited Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade to take a plunge in active politics to give vent to her feelings against that country.

Khan has also offered Devyani an SP ticket from Rampur in the state to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“If Devyani wishes, she could contest from Rampur after resigning from her job...she will get a chance to express her opposition to the US policies in the lower house then,” Khan said here on Thursday.

He also said that his party was ready to welcome Devyani if she decides to join active politics.

Khan decried the BJP and other saffron organisations for what he alleged “subdued” protests over the treatment meted out to the diplomat. “It is really surprising...these outfits are coming out in support of the woman diplomat,” he said.

Khan had allegedly been detained at Boston’s Logan Airport in the USA while he was visiting the country with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in April this year. He was questioned by the officials of the homeland security department.

The SP leader had then cut short his visit and had cancelled all his engagements in USA. The Indian government had then taken up the matter with the state department.
