Vardhan blasts Cong over support

Last Updated 02 January 2014, 20:01 IST

The BJP gave a reality check to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with Leader of Opposition Harsh Vardhan slamming his move of accepting support of the ‘corrupt’ Congress party, during debate before voting.

The leader, who started with welcoming every legislator and appreciating Kejriwal, turned aggressive when he started counting the “mistakes” of the AAP which led the BJP to oppose the confidence motion. The Congress, however, maintained that it will go with its party high command’s decision to support the AAP.

Miffed at Kejriwal’s decision to form a government citing referendum and SMSes, Harsh Vardhan said, “The party has rejected the people’s mandate in search for power. The party is going hand-in-glove with the Congress party knowing the fact that it came to power by accusing the Congress chief minister and cabinet ministers of corruption.”

He also took a dig at Kejriwal as he had earlier said he would neither take or give support to any other party.

He also questioned the dignity of Kejriwal over his meeting with a controversial Muslim leader.

“Why did your party leader suggest for a referendum for Kashmir if the residents are demanding a separate country? Why did you meet a Muslim leader who is in such a big controversy that once he had to apologise in the court over his comment on terrorism,” he asked Kejriwal.

Harsh Vardhan also sparked a controversy when he slammed the AAP for defaming the death of Delhi Police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in the Batla House encounter.

“You disrespected a martyr just for votes. Why did you question Batla House encounter before elections? We all have huge respect for Sharma and his family. You should not have done this,” he said.

The BJP leader also suggested Kejriwal to go by the rule books and table the issues in the Assembly and have a debate on them before issuing orders. He was referring to Kejriwal’s decision on slashing water tariff.

DPCC president and Congress MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely countered the BJP’s claims on unauthorised colonies and other issues and defended the Congress’s rule.

He said his party supports the AAP for the betterment of people and it will continue to do so till the time party is working for the development of Delhi. He also advised Kejriwal against taking any key decisions in haste.

“We assure you our support till you work for the betterment of Delhi. But please don’t react swiftly. Understand the situation before taking decisions. What about people who do not have piped water supply? Only residents of posh colonies will get benefit from the subsidy on water. What about the people who live in unauthorised colonies?” he said.
