Bill on lake development authority

Last Updated 03 January 2014, 19:50 IST

The State government is drafting a bill to constitute a ‘Lake Development Authority’ with statutory powers to oversee development of lakes and clearing of encroachments.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Minor Irrigation Minister Shivaraj Thangadagi said the bill will be tabled during the Legislature session this month.

The proposed legislation will provide powers to the authority to take steps to ensure uninterrupted flow of water into lakes, removal of silt, repair of canals and also to clear encroachments.

The bill will also have penal clauses to punish those found guilty of encroaching lake or tank beds.

The minister further said that the district-level committees would be constituted under the new legislation for preservation and development of lakes.
