Centre mulls over steps for more CBI autonomy

The Centre is considering several measures for providing greater functional autonomy ro the CBI, including setting up a committee for appointment of director and also provisions for his removal.

The government revealed this in a booklet ‘10 Years of Progress and Growth’ distributed to media at the press conference of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday. The document said that several measures for giving greater functional autonomy to the CBI are under consideration of the government.

The other measures include the presence of the CBI Director in the committee for selection of officers at the level of Superintendent of Police and above and non-interference in investigations. The request for sanction for prosecution received from the CBI will be decided within three months.
