Poor couple try to sell their newborn

In a shocking incident, a couple tried to sell their newborn baby, here, on Saturday.
Jagadish and Ranganayaki, residents of Hariharapura village, K R Pet taluk, tried to sell their two-day-old daughter, owing to extreme poverty.

Jagadish had turned blind, a few years ago, and was being looked after by his second wife Ranganayaki. She worked as a daily-wage labourer to support her husband and a daughter, born to the first wife of Jagadish.

Ranganayaki giving birth to a girl child was a cause for worry for the couple and they decided to sell their new born.

A social worker alerted hospital authorities about the couple’s attempt to sell the baby.
Police and officials from the department of Women and Child Welfare visited the hospital and convinced the couple against selling the child.
