Last Updated 09 January 2014, 04:20 IST

The benchmark BSE Sensex today rose over 42 points in early trade, extending yesterday's gains on sustained buying by funds and retail investors amid a mixed trend overseas.

The 30-share index, which had gained 36.14 points in the previous session, rose further by 42.10 points, or 0.20 per cent, with consumer durables, power, PSU and realty sector stocks leading the rally.

Similarly, broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty edged higher by 9.55 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 6,184.15.

Brokers said selective buying by participants and a mixed trend at other Asian bourses influenced the trading sentiment.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was up by 0.05 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei Index fell 1.28 per cent in the morning trade today.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.41 per cent in yesterday's trade.
