Complete drinking water projects: ZP members

Noting that several drinking water projects in the district remained incomplete, Zilla Panchayat members urged the officials concerned to complete them on priority, during a meeting held here, recently.

ZP member D Shivalingaiah said, even though complaints regarding defunct hand-pumps in Koppa village of Maddur was lodged with the authorities concerned in February itself, they are yet to take up repair works. Authorities claim that there are no funds to take up repair works.

Several persons have been inconvenienced due to the defunct hand-pumps, which should be repaired immediately, he demanded.

Vice-President Chandrakala said, two borewells were dug at Yatthagadahalli two years ago, but pumps have not been installed to draw water from them.

Member Marigowda said, 60-70 borewells dug in Srirangapatna taluk required immediate repair and maintenance works. He said, there was drinking water problem at Arakere hobli and urged the officials to sort it out.

Reports sought

CEO Rohini Sindhuri said, instructions have been sent to Panchayat Development Officers to submit reports regarding the number of borewells and their condition, and drinking water problems under their limits. She said, the company entrusted to construct drinking water units has not taken up the works properly.

A letter in this regard has been sent to the State government. The company has sought extension till August to complete the project, she said.

Opposition leader Basavaraja moved a resolution, urging the government to pay the dues to sugarcane farmers and to release water from reservoirs for agriculture.
