Hailing the triumph of the team in the Ranji Trophy, the Karnataka State Cricket Association on Sunday dedicated the victory to its former president Srikandadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar who had passed away soon after assuming office for a second term.

“It was a dream of our late President Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar to see Karnataka winning the Ranji Trophy,” said KSCA President P R Ashok Anand, echoing the sentiments expressed by the association’s secretary Brijesh Patel, under whom Karnataka won the Ranji Trophy in 1982-83.

Karnataka had then defeated the mighty Mumbai by virtue of the innings lead in Mumbai. “The highlight of this season has been the number of outright victories. The efforts of more than 10 years has borne fruits and I congratulate the entire team, selectors and support staff,” said Patel.

Karnataka had managed to stitch together seven outright wins this season, a rare achievement not only by Karnataka but by any team competing in the long history of Ranji cricket.

The team took home a cheque for Rs 2 crore for winning the title and KSCA’s managing committee has unanimously decided to add an additional contribution of Rs 1 crore, taking the total prize pool to Rs 3 crore. “The entire prize money will be distributed amongst the team members as well as administrative and support staff,” KSCA spokesman Vinay Mruthyunjaya said.

The team will arrive in Bangalore on Monday morning and the KSCA will be hosting a lunch in honour of the team at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, he said.
