Australia crush WI to take lead

Last Updated 28 November 2009, 17:31 IST

Despite Barath, who at 19 became the youngest West Indian to score a Test century with his 104, waging the rescue act, the rest of the Carribean batsmen hardly made anything noteworthy, folding up for a dismal 187 in 52.1 overs on an embarrassing third day for the Caribbeans at the Gabba.

Resuming at the overnight score of 137 for five, the Windies were dismissed for 228 before lunch in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 480. Hosts’ skipper Ricky Ponting had no hesitation in asking the visitors to follow-on and Ben Hilfenaus stepped up to inflict early damage on the Windies.

The fast bowler picked up three wickets for 20 in addition to his two first innings scalps.
Barath’s century was studded with 19 boundaries and his 138-ball knock was ended by Shane Watson.

Australia now lead the three-match series 1-0.
