Last Updated 05 February 2014, 18:30 IST

In order to stem any communal flare-up, the police on Wednesday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144, following tension in the town when a group of men allegedly tried to outrage the modesty of a woman, forcibly entering the house and assaulting the youth with an iron rod at Mogaveerapattana.

Besides, a deputy commissioner of police, five inspectors from the City Police Commissionerate and four Karnataka State Reserve Police platoons have been deployed to bring the situation under control, according to City Police Commissioner Hithendra.

“In addition, four more KSRP platoons and 100 police personnel from outside the district will arrive to keep a vigil. We have arrested seven people and a few more arrests will follow. The fishermen claim anti-social elements have been creating trouble since a month. However, we have not received any complaint,” he added.

Local residents alleged that the group threw stones, bottles and knocked on doors of houses belonging to fishermen when they were away fishing at night. The fishermen, in order to nab the culprits, did not venture out fishing, and when the group tried to create trouble on Tuesday night, they caught hold of a person, while others managed to flee.

However, another group returning from Uroos, who supported the troublemakers, were caught by fishermen of Mogaveera community and handed over to Ullal police.

In retaliation, 25 youths from Ullal Kodi barged into the house of Subhash Kotian and tried to outrage the modesty of his wife and assaulted his son Manish Kotian, who is recuperating at a private hospital in Deralakatte. The mob pelted the house of Praveen and Sathish with stones and damaged boats that were anchored. Meanwhile, two youths from Ullal Kodi mosque used vulgar signs at Mogaveera Samaja women at Mogaveerapattana maidan, following which the enraged women tried to forcibly enter the mosque, but were prevented by the police.
