Waveriders enter semis

Delhi Waveriders stormed into the semifinals of the 2014 Hockey India League with a thrilling 1-0 victory over defending champions Ranchi Rhinos on Wednesday.

In an evenly contested match, both the sides struggled to open their account. But a 65th-minute strike from Akashdeep Singh sealed the issue in favour of Waveriders, who were playing their last home match of the season. The victory also tightened their grasp on top of the table with 34 points.

In a barren but an action-packed first half, the two teams entertained a packed gathering with their attacking moves but could not translate them into goals. Akashdeep had an excellent opportunity to score when he worked his way to the top of the circle, only to mishit.

The Rhinos got a penalty corner at the stroke of half time but Floris Evers failed to convert.
