Suspect held, booked for attempt to murder

A retired military officer opened fire at ground, injuring two people near a fitness centre in Vidyaranyapura on Thursday night.

The injured, Chandrashekhar and Bhaskar, both 30, were rushed to a nearby hospital. Bhaskar was treated as outpatient, while doctors operated on Chandrashekhar’s leg. He is out of danger, added the police.

According to police, Nagaraj, 62, a resident of Defence Layout, opened fire at the ground near Snap Fitness Centre using his private licensed revolver after a heated argument with the victims over a petty issue. The police have arrested Nagaraj and booked him for attempt to murder.

Nagaraj, who runs a private security agency, went to the fitness centre on Thursday night as a replacement for a security guard. Chandrashekhar, a resident of Nandini Layout, was earlier working with the fitness centre as a trainer, while Bhaskar from Thindlu was the formerly a member of the centre.

Chandrashekhar had come to meet Bhaskar and some other people to discuss opening of a new fitness centre, police said. According to police, Nagaraj often intervened in the issues related to trainers.

On Thursday also, his “intervention” led to a heated exchange with Chandrashekhar and Bhaskar. An irate Nagaraj then opened two rounds of fire at ground. However, the duo sustained injuries as the bullets grazed their legs. The police have seized his 7.62-mm calibre pistol and two cartridges.
