A 25-year-old woman was killed after being attacked with a meat cleaver by two men near Karol Bagh metro station in central Delhi on Friday. Sources said the attackers have been identified with the help of CCTV footage, but no arrests have been made.

Simranjeet Kaur lived with family in south Delhi’s Nanakpura and worked with an MNC in Noida. She was married for two years and lived with her husband. “It is a very tragic incident. We have registered a case of murder under Indian Penal Code and initiated probe,” said Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi.

Simranjeet was paying a surprise visit to her cousin to congratulate her on her motherhood. Police said she travelled from Noida to Karol Bagh on Delhi Metro. She was barely half a kilometre from Karol Bagh metro station when the incident took place around 7:30 pm.

Eyewitnesses told the police that two men on a scooter skidded to a halt beside Simranjeet. One of them proceeded to attack her with a meat cleaver. She was attacked twice and is understood to have died immediately after the first blow on her chest.

Locals rushed to help Simranjeet, but the attackers managed to flee. Simranjeet was lying in a pool of blood when a police patrol van reached the spot. She was taken to a nearby hospital, but declared brought dead.
