SC extends Kodnani's interim bail by a week

Last Updated 17 February 2014, 22:13 IST

The Supreme Court on Thursday extended by one more week the interim bail of former Gujarat minister and 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case convict Maya Kodnani. and asked her to submit a medical report indicating the level of her burns.

A bench of Justices H L Dattu and S A Bobde granted Kodnani the final opportunity to adduce a certificate by a recognised medical practitioner specifying the kind of injuries she had sustained after a burning lamp fell on her.

Kodnani has sought extension of her interim bail by another three months due to the injuries. Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, appearing for her, contended that the petitioner had developed depression and suicidal impulses due to her conditions, warranting urgent intervention by the court.

The court was not happy with the failure of her counsel to produce the certificate despite two previous opportunities. The court had adjourned the case last week for the purpose.
It exempted Kodnani till Monday next from surrendering and posted her plea for extension of bail for February 24.

Kodnani has filed the petition challenging the February 8 order of the Gujarat High Court declining to extend her three-month temporary bail granted on medical grounds last November. She had sought extension of bail by 180 days.

One of the 32 convicts in the Naroda Patiya case, Kodnani had been awarded life term.
