The Election Commission on Thursday met the chief electoral officers, top bureaucrats and police chiefs of all the states and union territories to review the law and order situation and  their readiness for the forthcoming general elections.

The Commission asked officials to carry out “vulnerability mapping” to identify weaker areas and voters and take precautionary steps to ensure all sections of voters could exercise their franchise without difficulties.

State Chief Election Officers, Chief Secretaries, Director Generals of Police and Principal Secretaries (Home), Police Nodal Officers and Nodal Officers for Expenditure Monitoring attended Thursday’s meeting.

Official sources said that the EC reviewed the level of compliance to its recent directives on transfers and postings, filling up election related vacancies, budgetary provision for the polls, strengthening the position of chief electoral officers among other things.

The Commission obtained assessments from the officers on the latest law and order situation and concerns specific to each state, as it underlined the need for inter-state coordination to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections.
