Md Sporting end winless streak in style

Mohammedan Sporting finally ended their winless streak with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in a round 19 encounter of the I-League here on Friday.

After Luciano Sabrosa (12th minute) scored from the penalty spot, Josimar (23rd) doubled the hosts’ lead. Cajetan Fernandes pulled one back for the visitors’ in the 39th minute and there was real hope of a fightback when Mohammedans were reduced to ten-men with the dismissal of defender Mehrajuddin Wadoo just before the interval.
However, substitute Nirmal Chhetri made sure of the points in the 83rd minute to secure Mohammedan’s first win in nine matches, which lifted the home side to tenth place with 16 points – a point and a place above Churchill who are in 11th.

In the other I-League encounter that was held on Friday, Salgaocar beat Shillong Lajong by a similar scoreline to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.

Scottish striker Darryl Duffy got a brace of goals. Haokip pulled a goal back for the away side but Dudu Omegbemi sealed the points with a third goal in three games to send them three points clear of their opponents in fourth place – they trail league leaders Bengaluru FC by a similar margin.

Meanwhile, arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan clash at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday.

Both Kolkata giants come into this fixture on the back of poor form as each side has failed to win their last four matches in all competitions.
