Man makes off with Rs 30 lakh being taken to bank

A sum of Rs 30 lakh being transported to a private bank by its staff was stolen right under the nose of the bank officials here on Monday.

Officials of the Pragati Krishna Grameen Bank had stopped the four-wheeler at a garage to replace its deflated tyre, when the miscreant made off with the cash bag kept in the vehicle, said the police.

Assistant Manager Rajashekhar, accompanied by clerk Aruna and driver Gadilingappa, was transporting the cash to the bank from an IDBI bank branch, when the incident took place.

DySP T S Muruganna said a customer of the Grameen bank’s branch in Korlagundi village on Saturday sought refund of Rs 20 lakh deposited with the bank. As the branch didn’t have the cash, the staff on Monday came to the main branch at Valmiki Circle in Bellary, where they got a cheque and realised it in the IDBI bank.

When they approached Moka Road, the tyre of the four-wheeler burst and they stopped the vehicle at a nearby garage for repair. The suspect took the cash bag kept in the vehicle and escaped in a car parked at a distance. Though the police across the city immediately intercepted vehicles, they could not nab the suspect, the DySP said.
