Cong workers protest corruption in BBMP

Last Updated 01 December 2009, 19:24 IST

The agitating Congress workers locked the BBMP gates to protest against the release of funds to the contractors even before the work is completed. The demonstration, which began at about 11.30 am, ended at about 2 pm.

Following this, office work was partially affected. The demonstrators shouted anti-BJP and anti-BBMP slogans against the nexus between the officials and the contractors, which they alleged, had led to heavy loss to the Palike.

The agitators left the place after BBMP Commissioner Bharat Lal Meena met the workers and took note of their grievances. He assured a high-level probe into their allegations and action against the guilty persons. The demonstration went off peacefully as no untoward incident was reported.

Later, speaking to Deccan Herald, former Mayor and Congress leader Ramachandrappa said, the BBMP releases money to the contractors on the basis of works-code within the budget. The code work is prepared only if approval is granted for it and once the work code is sanctioned the contractor is entitled to get money. On many occasions, the BBMP officials under duress from the ministers and MLAs issue code works. This nexus between officials, contractors and politicians will turn BBMP bankrupt, alleged Ramachandrappa.
