Leaders should adhere to model code of conduct: DC

‘Enrollment of names for electoral list will be continued till March 16’

Deputy Commissioner and district election officer B S Shekarappa has said that with the announcement of dates for Lok Sabha polls, the model code of conduct has come into force and the political parties and elected representatives should adhere to the code of conduct. 

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said that the notifications for election will be issued on March 19. The last date for filing nominations to Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency is March 26. The nominations will be scrutinised on March 27. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 29. The polling will be held on April 17. 

The DC said that no political parties can hold public meetings without obtaining prior permissions. No new projects can be announced. New tender process and selection of beneficiaries should be withheld. The elected representatives can not use government vehicles. Political leaders should not take part in cultural and religious programmes, the DC said. 

The enrollment of names for electoral list will be continued till March 16, he clarified. Shekarappa said that there are 1,168 polling booths in five Assembly constituencies in the district, of which422 are sensitive and 237 are hyper sensitive booths. There are 52 booths falling within Maoist infested areas. There are 8,38,894 voters, of which, 424858 are men and 414004 are women. 

Mustering and demustering will be held at Koppa Government First Grade College, Mudigere GJC College, Chikmagalur STJ College, Tarikere SJM College and Kadur GJC College. A total of 5,671 officials will be deployed and 1,340 EVMs will be used. ZP Chief Executive Officer Karunakara and ACs Channabasappa and Anuradha were present.
