5,006 new voters enrol during Sunday's spl drive

The district election officer A B Ibrahim has said that a total of 5,006 fresh applications were received for enrollment in the voters list during the day long drive carried out on Sunday in 1,766 polling booths across Dakshina Kannada district.

The district administration had conducted the drive on the direction of the Election Commission. Highest of 1,040 fresh applications were received from Mangalore South constituency, followed by Modbidri—970, Belthangady—906, Sullia—656, Mangalore—577, Bantwal—577, Puttur—500, Bantwal—256 and Mangalore North constituency—101.

March 16 is the last date for inclusion of names in the voters’ list in the State. People who want to include their names in the list have to submit the filled-in application (Form 6). The Office of the Electoral Officer will stop receiving the applications after March 16. Polling for the coming Lok Sabha elections is scheduled to be held on April 17 in the State.

All the applications will be processed in 10 days’ time. Currently, the district has 15,30,071 voters, of which, 7,72188 are women and 7,57,883 are men voters. Electoral photo identity cards will also be issued to new voters.

Ban on explosives

In the wake of Lok Sabha polls, the transportation of lethal weapons, swords, live bullets and explosives by those possessing license have been banned in the district till May 23. However, this is not applicable to those security men in the banks and government services. Any information on the illegal transportation of explosives and lethal weapons should be brought to the notice of the nearest police station.

Control rooms

With the election round the corner, the district administration has said that the Excise Department will operate 24 hours control room to receive complaints of illegal manufacture, stockpiling or distribution of alcohol.
