Top Indian track and field athletes, including medal prospects Vikas Gowda and Krishna Poonia, have been cleared by the Sports Ministry for foreign training stints as part of the preparation for the Commonwealth and the Asian Games later this year.

Poonia, along with her husband and coach Virender, have been cleared for training at the Mac Wilkins training centre in California from May 1 to July 21.

Poonia, who will be defending the women’s discus title in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, had trained under Wilkins, who won discus gold in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, before the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics.

Her team-mate, Seema Punia, has also been cleared to train at the throwing Academy at New Port Beach in California from May 1 to July 21.

Gowda, the reigning Asian men’s discus throw champion, will be at the John Godina throwing centre at Phoenix from April 1 till the start of the Asian Games in Incheon.
