A one-time undertrial, who had tipped off the police about the whereabouts of serial killer rapist M Jaishankar after the latter escaped from the Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara on September 1, 2013, has been rewarded with a cash prize of Rs five lakh.

Abdul Mudassir Pasha received a cheque for the sum from the Chief Secretary, Kaushik Mukherjee, here on Thursday. Pasha, a resident of Banashankari, played a vital role in helping the police apprehend Jaishankar.

“I was lodged in jail in a dowry harassment case. During my stay there, Jaishankar stayed in a barrack next to mine. He befriended me and took my mobile phone number,” Pasha said after receiving the reward. “Five days after his escape from the jail, he called me up and asked me to get him food and a two-wheeler at Kudlu Gate where he was staying in a hut. I then alerted the police who quickly apprehended him.”
