BJP hails spread of 'Modi wave'

Last Updated 16 March 2014, 19:47 IST

Lionising of Narendra Modi seems to have reached a new high as supporters of the BJP prime ministerial candidate greeted him with the chant “Somnath to Vishwanath”, referring to two temples of Lord Shiva in Gujarat and Varanasi, respectively.

The chant, which connotes the spread of “Modi wave”, filled the sky at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple during his recent visit to Varanasi.

Later, at a rally addressed by Modi, the cheering crowd reflected the prevailing mood among the party cadre. However, it was not the “mood” alone that prompted the saffron party to field Modi from Varanasi.

The constituency not only forms part of the eastern region of UP, considered to be the toughest spot for the BJP, but also has proximity to several seats in Bihar. “Modi's mere presence in Varanasi will galvanise the party workers and will directly affect the outcome of polls,” BJP leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak told Deccan Herald.
