Cash, sarees seized

The police and the poll officials since Thursday night seized cash and articles suspected to be meant for distribution among voters across the State.

The police have seized about Rs 75 lakh in cash at Byatarayanapura in Bangalore North constituency and Chamarajanagar, said Anil Kumar Jha, Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka.

In Bellary, the poll officials have seized 10 boxes of sarees, cricket bats, pressure cookers and wall clocks, Jha said.

In Chamarajanagar, the election authorities seized Rs 26 lakh in cash that was being transported in a car, at a check post on Santemarahalli Road late on Thursday night. The cash was being carried in a plastic bag without any valid documents, by driver Girish and S Rajashekar of Gopishettiyuru in the Kollegal taluk. A case has been registered by the town police, said A M Kunjappa, the election officer.

The poll officials seized 227 sarees worth Rs five lakh and a car which was heading from Tamil Nadu to Talwadi in the district late on Thursday night, Kunjappa said. A team led by Flying Squad Executive Magistrate Chikkamadegowda intercepted the vehicle at a checkpost near Punajanuru and arrested Tulasiraman from Tamil Nadu, L Shankar and Lingaiah. 

In Bagalkot, the police seized Rs six lakh that was being carried in a car without valid documents, at Badagandi check post in Belagi taluk. Shivanand Hiremath of Bijapur, Paramaiah Surgimath, Praveen Shah and Jitendra Shah were carrying the cash to Belgaum from Bijapur.
