The CBI recorded the statement of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in connection with the alleged kickbacks made to him and the State Trading Corporation (STC) employees by some private companies.

The statement was recorded following the agency registering a preliminary enquiry in October last year on the complaint of STC that some private companies made payments to its officials.

The move came following investigations into allegations that Singh as Union steel minister had received payoffs of Rs 2.8 crore from a Mumbai-based steel company.

The STC had given a complaint on which Aam Aadmi Party leader Prashant Bhushan also wrote to the CBI director and approached the Delhi High Court seeking a probe into the matter.

CBI sources said the complaint filed by STC and Bhushan has been clubbed. Singh had denied the allegations against him.

In December, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking action against the chief minister.

He alleged that Singh accepted money in the form of loans from a company in lieu of a power generating company in Himachal Pradesh.

The agency is also looking for claims made by an insurance agent.
