CWG launch volunteer programme

Last Updated 04 December 2009, 17:18 IST

OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi launched the programme and unveiled its logo at a ceremony attended by a host of officials, including Sports Secretary Sindhushree Khullar and India’s lone individual Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra.

The volunteers, to be recruited from all over the country, will be imparted training in various functional aspects related to the hosting of the Games, scheduled October 3 to 14.

Five categories of volunteers — senior citizens, professionals, home makers, differently abled and international — were registered during the programme.

To facilitate easy registration of the volunteers, a special interactive web portal cwgdelhi2010.org/delhiunited was also launched by Kalmadi.

Bindra narrated an anecdote from his experience during the Beijing Olympics last year to drive home how he can relate to the volunteers.

“In Beijing the two volunteers assigned to the Indian contingent knew Hindi. When I won the gold medal they gave me a congratulatory message written in Hindi. It was a very special message and I have kept that congratulatory card by the side of my gold medal at home,” he said. CWG OC vice-chairman Randhir Singh, Chief Executive Jarnail Singh, Secretary General Lalit Bhanot and treasurer AK Mattoo were among those present on the occasion.
