For women, summer is synonymous with skirts. Stocked in the wardrobe, pull out all the skirts of varied lengths, cuts, shapes and prints, that need a breath of fresh air.

With the sun showering its bountiful rays already, it is the prefect time to experiment with new trends in skirts and make a style statement!

In a girl’s wardrobe, a skirt is a “staple and always a classic,” opines David Abraham from the brand Abrahan & Thakore while informing how he experimented with abstract patterns on cotton in his last spring/summer collection.

“Pale colours is what we focused on but did not give up on the classic black and white,” he adds. The selection of colour for a skirt is a very personal choice, such as its length.
While Kangana Ranaut looks dazzling in a mid-calf length pencil skirt, the same might be a fashion faux pas for another body type.

Therefore, “those who are hip-heavy, should opt for circle, flaired or A-line skirts.

The classic length of right above the knee suits almost everyone,” suggests designer Archana Rao who experimented with skirts in her collection recently showcased at Wills India Fashion Week, Fall Winter.

“We worked with men’s wear fabric to create women’s wear.

So a fabric generally used for men’s trouser was used for stitching a skirt, which is a very feminine garment.
These skirts which are not very long or flowy can be paired with suits or blazer for a perfect look in winter,” suggests the designer.         Keep this tip in mind for the next winter, but for summer, you must opt for “chiffon or cotton fabrics in skirts and try a cut something that is easy and effortless for the body to carry,” adds Archana who did detailing with ‘T-tied thread work’ on summer skirts in her previous collection.

For those who put a premium on ‘comfort’, the market is flooded with elastic waist skirts and for those who find fashion more important, opt for a tulip skirt which has more fabric around the waistline and a close-fitting hemline.

If the summer heat is too much to bear, go short and try short frothy skirts or short umbrella skirts and flaunt the legs. One can also play with stripes in horizontal and vertical forms, taking inspiration from designer Archana Kochhar’s collection showcased during Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014.

Try new combinations with your choice of skirt and swank it for summer lunches and after dark romantic evenings.
