With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh out of contention, the BJP on Friday sought to drag Congress president Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul in the firing line by charge sheeting the duo for the UPA’s all round failure.

The party held the mother-son duo responsible for exercising authority without responsibility and for “deliberate” and “conscious” devaluation of the prime minister’s office.

“The BJP’s first charge is Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are equally guilty of all the ills in India along with Manmohan Singh, because they wanted to exercise authority without accountability,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was heading the sub-committee on drafting the charge sheet, told reporters. The prime minister is the most important person in the country. He is not only the head of the government but also the leader of the country and the final authority.

“Manmohan Singh worked more like the CEO of a company where the board was headed by Sonia Gandhi with Rahul Gandhi as her deputy”, the document’s opening charges read.

Senior leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Nirmala Sitaraman, J P Nadda and Murlidhar Rao were also present on the dais.

Titled “A dark decade in governance”, the BJP released its charge sheet on the UPA which it said was the most corrupt government post independence. “This government is a failure on all fronts. The legacy of the UPA for a great country like India is a suffering India, insecure India, distressed India, depressed India and an India whose image stands tainted because of the shameless saga of scams and corruption,” Prasad said.

The document goes beyond compiling big ticket scams to reflect failures in several sectors put together in nine chapters focussing on the faltering economy, scams, serious challenge to national security, foreign policy failure, neglecting north-east, ignoring education and healthcare, undermining institutions and unfulfilled 2009 manifesto.
